Research Notes: The IlKhanid/Il-Khanate dynasty was established by Hulegu Khan, the descendant of Genghis (Jinkees) Khan, in 653H/1256CE. The Mongols accepted Islam with Ghazan Khan in 694H/1295CE. Ruling over Persia and Iraq, the empire lasted until 735H/1335CE when the Il-Khanate empire became divided and overcome by the Jalayirids and other local dynasties in 753H/1353CE (Khalili, 2006). The most famous Qur’an manuscripts of the IlKhanids were those of Oljaytu’s commissioned works in the 8th/14th century (James, 1988). The IlKhanid calligraphers were influenced by Yaqut al Musta’simi and often had large Qur’ans with beautiful illuminations and large Muhaqqaq and Rayhani scripts with interlinear translations or tafseer (Blair, 2015; James, 1988).
