وهو نوعان ظاهر وباطن أما الظاهر فالمرسل من الأخبار وذلك أربعة أنواع ما أرسله الصحابي

Provenance: There is an ownership note on the title page stating: “Owned by the poor one who needs the Mercy of Al-Qadeer: Abdur-Rahman bin ‘Abdullah ash-Shareef Al Hanafi”. This manuscript was in a private collection in the UK previously

Research Notes: Based on my research, this is the oldest cataloged manuscript of Usul al Bazdawi- being written only 52 years after the Al-Bazdawi’s death. Other manuscripts of this work (not in order of age): (1) An extant copy missing the beginning is in the Kitabkhanah Library of Iran Parliament in Tehran, Iran dated 759H. (2) An extant manuscipt is in the Gazi Husrev-beg Library in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina scribed by Khalil Ar-Rumi Al-Bafi and it is dated 800H. (3) A manuscript dated Saturday, the first of Rajab, 710H and scribed by Ya’qoub al Kharbawi is cataloged by Alukah. (4) A manuscript in the Qatar National Library (HC.MS.01390) in ta’liq script has annotations with the oldest signed by Khalil bin Muhammad ‘Ali dated 947H. (5) Dr. Sa’id Bakdash references a manuscript dated 692H (6) An 18th century copy is cataloged in the British Museum (Or.3511) citing other copies in Paris (no. 836), Rosen Institute (no.16), Sprenger (no.597), Khedive’s Library vol iip.236) Ref: Rieu, C. (1894). Supplement to the Catalogue of the Arabic Manuscripts in the British Museum. British Museum. Several copies are in in the Dhaahiriyyah library in Damascus, Syria: one is dated 733H (7099), another undated (7880), another dated 743H scribed by Ibrahim bin Ahmad bin Muhammad Al-Mazaghi (13884), another dated 812H scribed by Muhammad bin Yusuf (20741) (8) A copy is found in the Rifa’aee library in Syria (5848) and is dated 749H and scribed by Hassan Ayyoub. (9) Another copy dated 749H is found in the Awqaaf in Halab (17513); there is also another copy in the Awqaaf (15340)(10) The University of Kuwait Library has several copies: (831) is copy of the Chester Beatty manuscript scribed by Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Ahmad Al Arqooqi and is undated; (826) is an undated copy scribed by Fadhlullah bin Sa’eed al Halwaani As-Saraa’i and this has a seal of Muhammad Basha endowment to Madrassah Barghoush; (11) An early copy dated 606H is found in the Murad Mulla library in Turkey (482/ 1089- 31); (12) Several copies are in the Faydhullah Effendi Library in Turkey: (#616) is dated 754H; (#615) is dated 709H; (#614) is dated 863H; (13) An undated copy is in the Maktabah al Uthmaniyyah in Halab, Syria (#3913) (14) An undated copy in the Maktabah al Markaziyyah in Saudi Arabia (5015, 17) (15) A copy dated 673H is found in the King Saud University Library (#307) in Saudi Arabia. Another copy dated 667H is catalogued (#2256) and is scribed by Zakariyyah bin Muhammad bin Zakariyyah Al Hanafi (16) An undated copy in the Dar Al Kutub Al Qatariyah in Misr (#412) and cites ownership to Muhammad bin Sultan al Hanafi, Abdul Kareem bin Muhammad, Isma’eel bin Ibraheem Al Mudarris in the year 1200H. (17) Undated copies (0836-فب) & (4541-فب) and 10798-10801 & 10787-10794 & 10936-10939 & 11417-11422 & 40879-40884 & 2315 & 4296 & 5565& 1105-فح – the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies. (18) A copy dated 798H is found in the Maktabah Waliuddeen Effendi (#801) and is scribed by Yaqoub bin Futuhi bin A’mash and has an endowment note of Sidqi Zadeh Ahmed Rasheed. (19) Copies in El Escorial Library: (#266) is dated 789H and has an ownership note of Mahmoud bin Abdullah known as Hayawi Zadeh dated 966H another copy in the collection is dated 741H and scribed by Ibraheem bin ‘Ali (#1361). (20) A copy dated 727H is found in the Azhariyyah Library (#4492) and scribed by Sha’ban bin Ahmad bin Mahmoud bin Tawghan At-Turkmani al Hanafi.
